Story:
Anna (Mohan Babu) is the sole influence of the self designated judiciary that reels through the powerful political circle as well asthe unfathomable Mumbai underworld. Anna's family includes an anomalous son Bhushan (Kishore) and Krishna (Vishnu Manchu). In the meanwhile, Sarkar's younger son Krishna also returns after his exams accompanied by his new found love Shrisha (Shanvi). Anna confronts Bhushan everytime for his misbehavior and the rift till now implicit emerges on the forefront. In the meanwhile Anna finds himself cornered after being singled out for the main reason behind the assassination of KR his chief opponent. After he gets hospitalized it is left for Krishna to track down his father's opponents and knock them down in a phased manner.
Perspective:
Like the Sarkar, Manchu's "Rowdy" is also a Dark Political Factionist film that has a predictable storyline. The serious sequences, which added strength to the Hindi film, come a cropper in the Telugu version mainly because Kishore overacts. Surprisingly, even the dialogues by a good writer fall flat. The good part of this tediously boring film is RGV's close shots in the stunt sequences.
Just 10 minutes into the film and you will realise that everything has gone wrong with "Rowdy". By the time the movie reaches the interval point, it could well leave audience yawning. The latter half picks up and Vishnu Manchu has also tried to underplay his role. The climax scenes has been well conceptualised and shot.
Analysis:
Rowdy starts with RGV mark sequences and later takes an interesting shape, but soon falls into a predictable line. It looks as if RGV has completely lost grip on the script and has taken the viewers for granted and started narrating Sarkar. His claims of making an faction film fall flat. But it would have been better if the director had focussed a little more on the story. It seems he wanted to tell too many things in second half, but the tedious narration plays spoilsport. The film starts off well but drags so much in the second half that you end up feeling sleepy by the end. Many sequences are unconvincing and incoherent and one actually waits for the movie to end. Rowdy is an enjoyable film as long as you have not seen the Sarkar duology.
Performances:
Rowdy is saved by a command performance from Mohan Babu as the titular Anna. He transitions beautifully from regret to anger, from anger to sadness and from vulnerability to strength, often wordlessly and subtly. To his credit, Ramu, for the most part, lets Amitabh take control over his scenes no where more so than in a beautiful sequence where he and the character played by Vishnu (Anna's youngest son) try to come to terms with cruelty of Bhushan (Krishna). As to the other main protagonists, Vishnu cobbles together a competent performance, Eventhough sometimes intensely grouchy, while Shanvi is
once again pure plastic and absolutely unconvincing in her emotional outbursts. Jayasudha is superb in her role as wife of Anna. BHavani new comer is good in his role. Tanikella Bharini and Team play their part well. Kishore is fine as a baddie. Ravi Babu is okay as evil police officer.
Technicalities:
Action sequences are a few, but they are also finely executed. There is a one in jungle, with foggy atmosphere. Technically, its always a treat watching Ramu's flicks. Background score is so loud, but 3 songs are a much for this kind of movie. The Shiva theme-revisited, gives you Goosebumps. The cinematography is fine. The editing of the film could have been crispier and should have made this film a 20 minutes short. Production Values in the film are Good.
Plus:
- Mohan Babu,
- Vishnu Manchu,
- BGM,
- better Second Half
- Cinematography.
Minus:
- Slow Narration,
- Inspired Storyline and Script
- Failed to Suit
- the Rayalaseema Background.
Bottomline: Rowdy ends up as ordinary fare because of too inspirations in the script.
Rating: 2.5/5
